The HR Officer plays a key role in supporting the delivery of a professional, efficient and commercially focused HR service across the business. Supporting approximately 300 employees across multiple locations within the utilities, infrastructure and civil engineering sector, you will work closely with managers and employees to provide expert advice across employee relations, recruitment, absence management, performance management, payroll administration and HR compliance.

This is a varied, hands-on role with responsibility for managing day-to-day HR operations, supporting managers with people-related matters and ensuring HR processes are delivered consistently and in line with employment legislation and company policy.

The HR Officer will lead recruitment activity for both salaried and operational roles, deliver onboarding and induction programmes, support employee development initiatives and play a key role in driving employee engagement and organisational performance.

Acting as a trusted advisor to managers across the business, you will provide practical and commercially focused HR guidance, helping to build management capability, promote best practice and foster a positive, high-performing workplace culture.

The role also supports the delivery of HR reporting and people metrics, ensuring accurate workforce data is maintained and used to drive informed business decisions. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced HR professional who enjoys a broad generalist role within a fast-paced, growing organisation.

    • Manage employee relations cases including absence management, disciplinaries, grievances, capability and performance issues.

    • Lead recruitment campaigns for operational and office-based vacancies, ensuring a positive candidate experience.

    • Deliver onboarding and induction programmes for new starters.

    • Support managers in conducting investigations, formal meetings and appeals.

    • Monitor absence levels, identify trends and support managers in reducing sickness absence.

    • Manage family-friendly policies and processes, including maternity, paternity, shared parental leave and flexible working requests.

    • Produce and analyse HR reports covering recruitment, attrition, absence, probation reviews and workforce metrics.

    • Ensure employment contracts and HR documentation are issued accurately and within required timescales.

    • Support payroll administration activities and ensure employee records are maintained accurately.

    • Promote compliance with employment legislation, GDPR requirements and company policies.

    • Coach and support managers to improve people management capability and decision-making.

    • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across HR processes, policies and systems.

    • Conduct exit interviews and provide feedback and recommendations to management.

    • Support employee engagement, wellbeing, diversity and inclusion initiatives across the business.

    Qualifications

    • CIPD Level 3 or above.

    • Minimum of 5 years' experience within an HR role.

    • Strong understanding of employment legislation and HR processes.

    • GDPR awareness/training.

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
